On Saturday, November 19, 2011, Beyond Motion will sponsor "Connect for the Cause" – a Nia Dance Party to raise awareness and funds for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC).
Nia is a totally fun, energetic, fat-blasting, cardio class that combines cool moves from latin and modern dance, martial arts, and yoga. This rockin' day in the park will get your body moving and your heart pumping as you dance to everything from latin beats to lounge music.
"Connect for the Cause", Nia Dance Party takes place at Cambier Park in front of the bandshell on Saturday, November 19, 2011, from 9:00–11:00am. Registration begins at 8:30.
This event is near and dear to our hearts. Our family, like many others, has been touched by ovarian cancer more than once. My husband's mother and her sister have both battled this disease, and our family knows first hand how important education and support are. With symptoms going unnoticed or misdiagnosed, it is very important that women and their families know what to look for, what tests are available, and what to ask their doctors. They need to know that they have a support system here in Collier County, and that people care.
Ovarian cancer impacts entire families and communities. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 35–74. An estimated one woman in 58 will develop ovarian cancer during her lifetime. When one is diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages, the 5-year survival rate is over 90%. However, due to ovarian cancer's non-specific symptoms and lack of early detection tests, only 19% of all cases are found at this early stage. If caught in stage III or higher, the survival rate can be as low as 30.6%. Due to the nature of the disease, each woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer has a different profile and it is impossible to provide a general prognosis.
NOCC chapters, survivors, loved ones, caregivers and healthcare professionals, work together to bring crucial ovarian cancer programs and services to communities nationwide. We are looking to create awareness and support here in Collier County by hosting A Nia Dance Party, "Connect for the Cause".
Our goal is to raise at least $5,000 for the NOCC, by producing the first annual event "Connect for the Cause" on Saturday, November 19, 2011. Suggested donation $25. During the Nia Dance Party, we will be selling raffle tickets for $20. Raffle prizes include merchandise and gift certificates, from local business such as Naples Grande, Steamers Restaurant, A. Jaron Jewlers, Gulfshore Playhouse, Facial Esthetique, Hue Nails, and more. |
